50 years since invention of LED

The LED celebrates 50 years in existence this month. Dr Nick Holonyak Jr invented the first visible LED during his time working as a scientist at American multinational company GEC. Today aged 83, the inventor was able to enjoy the LED 50th Anniversary Symposium at the University of Illinois. His GE colleagues at the time, called the device ‘the magic one’. The first practical visible-spectrum light-emitting diode has come a long way since 1962, with both its practical uses and its ability to visually delight.

In other recent news, retail giant IKEA has pledged to use sell only LED-based lighting products by year 2016.
