Great Timing: Digital Led Signs at 35th America’s Cup
Our giant timing clocks had to be accurate to the split second and able to withstand the highly corrosive salt water.
The Challenge
Portsmouth, July 2015: The first official America’s Cup race to start in the UK since 1851, takes place. This inaugural race heralded the start of the 35th America’s Cup—concluding in Bermuda in 2017—a world-class event that predates the modern Olympic Games by 45 years—and is considered yachting’s biggest prize.
Spectra was asked to supply two digital LED signs for the giant timing clocks replacing the inadequate clocks from previous events. The displays had to be accurate to the split second and had to withstand the highly corrosive salt water.
The Solution
Spectra manufactured the two digital LED displays from its full colour P10 LED video modules and housed them in 316 stainless steel enclosures with 10mm thick toughened glass. Stainless steel enclosures were necessary to withstand the corrosive salt water. Corporate branding fascias were added later.
